Review: Konad

This is the m75 plate:

Here are some pictures of nails I have created using the m75 plate:

this is my sister's toe.  we used just any old red polish for a base, then the white special polish from Konad with the middle image which you can see above as well.

And, there is another picture before we cleaned up the edges.  The base color in is China Glaze's For Audrey (in case anyone wanted to know!) with again Konad's special polish in white.   The image we used in this picture is the flowing leaf looking image at the 11 o'clock hand in the top picture.  We added a dark blue rhinestone as well as you can see : )

I love Konad products! They are so easy to use, and I think they are very fun to apply. You can purchase Konad products at http://www.wowsocool.com/.  They sent me the products very quickly and they were nicely wrapped in bubble wrap to insure they didn't get broken in the mail.  I will definitely be buying some Konad products through wowsocool.com!

The Daily “Report” Update

Guest post written by Miranda Reeves

I work the early shift as a waitress so I don’t always get to see my favorite show “The Colbert Report” because I’m most of the time fast asleep by then.

So that means that a lot of time I’ll read recaps or watch video clips online of the previous night’s show after my shift ends at work. I use satellite internet UT to watch it but I haven’t always had it and been able to catch up like I’d like on the show. About a year ago I got satellite internet because the rural internet providers where I live just weren’t cutting it for me.

But now I don’t have to worry about slow load times. I can watch what I want in time to take a nap and then pick up my kids from school. My work schedule isn’t exactly ideal for a night owl, but it lets me provide for my family and be there when my kids are at home.

I also read Stephen Colbert’s book when it came out a while back. I’m hoping that he’ll write another one!

Hi everyone!

You've heard of CSN stores, haven't you?  They have over 200 online stores with almost every product you can image buying: video games, kitchen tables, book shelves, clothing, dinnerware sets, and so much more!   If you haven't heard of them, check out some of their stores and you will be amazed at how much they have to offer.  I have found so many cute things for my home I would love to have.  Knife sets, gorgeously designed plates, cute side tables... I just love their sites.  I especially like them because their products are so affordable (and that is something very important to us broke college students!).

And, guess what.  Keep you eye on K & Ks because we will be reviewing one of their knife sets very soon.  I can't wait and I hope you can't either! ; )

Have a great day guys!

Review: Hitch 22 by Christophere Hitchens

Over the course of his 60 years, Christopher Hitchens has been a citizen of both the United States and the United Kingdom. He has been both a socialist opposed to the war in Vietnam and a supporter of the U.S. war against Islamic extremism in Iraq. He has been both a foreign correspondent in some of the world's most dangerous places and a legendary bon vivant with an unquenchable thirst for alcohol and literature. He is a fervent atheist, raised as a Christian, by a mother whose Jewish heritage was not revealed to him until her suicide.

In other words, Christopher Hitchens contains multitudes. He sees all sides of an argument. And he believes the personal is political. (2010)
description taken from here.

Hitch 22 is not an autobiography, but a memoir.  Maybe it is just me, maybe it is my sense of arugumention, but I really like Hitchens and his writing.  He almost seems to go out of his way to give everyone a reason or 2 to disagree or hate him.  Which, to my wacky brain, equals underdog and scared to get close to anyone.  This makes me feel a soft spot for him and makes me think of his perspective when he writes his new book.

I'm not sure if his memoir was intended to make people laugh or not, but Hitchens sure made me giggle.  Some of the things he says are wow-worthy.  I mean, he says things that people will think but are too afraid to say, and that what makes me laugh, the degree of honesty he injects into his memoir.

I enjoyed this audio book more than I have ever enjoyed an audio book before.  I think it is a great read, but I think many people (very religious people) will have trouble seeing the humor of it and find it a disgrace.  If you are not afraid of trying something new or think you do not fit the category of finding it a disgrace, read it! Or, listen to it!  I think you will enjoy it too.

Review: The Broom Of The System by David Foster Wallace

The "dazzling, exhilarating" (San Francisco Chronicle) debut novel from the bestselling author of Infinite Jest, available for the first time as an audiobook.

At the center of The Broom of the System is the betwitching (and also bewildered) heroine, Lenore Stonecipher Beadsman. The year is 1990 and the place is a slightly altered Cleveland, Ohio, which sits on the edge of a suburban wasteland-the Great Ohio Desert. Lenore works as a switchboard attendant at a publishing firm, and in addition to her mind-numbing job, she has a few other problems. Her great-grandmother, a one-time student of Wittgenstein, has disappeared with twenty-five other inmates of the Shaker Heights Nursing Home. Her beau (and boss), editor-in-chief Rick Vigorous, is insanely jealous. And her cockatiel, Vlad the Impaler, has suddenly started spouting a mixture of psychobabble, Auden, and the King James Bible, which may propel him to stardom on a Christian fundamentalist television program.

Fiercely intelligent and entertaining, this debut novel from one of the most innovative writers of our generation explores the paradoxes of language, storytelling, and reality. description taken from here.

The Broom Of The System is a bunch of small stories within one story.  It doesn't have much of a plot, which makes it boring to me.  It's deeply written, yet not my type of book.  Sex and drugs are in it, but don't take over the book, much like Augusten Burroughs' books.  Overall, I can't say too much about this book.  I didn't care for it, and really couldn't finish reading it, it bored me so badly.

Review: When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead

Here is the story of Jerry Weintraub: the self-made, Brooklyn-born, Bronx-raised impresario, Hollywood producer, legendary deal maker, and friend of politicians and stars. No matter where nature has placed him--the club rooms of Brooklyn, the Mafia dives of New York's Lower East Side, the wilds of Alaska, or the hills of Hollywood--he has found a way to put on a show and sell tickets at the door. "All life was a theater and I wanted to put it up on a stage," he writes. "I wanted to set the world under a marquee that read: 'Jerry Weintraub Presents.'"

In WHEN I STOP TALKING, YOU'LL KNOW I'M DEAD, we follow Weintraub from his first great success at age twenty-six with Elvis Presley, whom he took on the road with the help of Colonel Tom Parker; to the immortal days with Sinatra and Rat Pack glory; to his crowning hits as a movie producer, starting with Robert Altman and Nashville, continuing with Oh, God!, The Karate Kid movies, and Diner, among others, and summiting with Steven Soderbergh and Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen.

Along the way, we'll watch as Jerry moves from the poker tables of Palm Springs (the games went on for days), to the power rooms of Hollywood, to the halls of the White House, to Red Square in Moscow and the Great Palace in Beijing-all the while counseling potentates, poets, and kings, with clients and confidants like George Clooney, Bruce Willis, George H. W. Bush, Armand Hammer, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, John Denver, Bobby Fischer . . .well, the list goes on forever.

And of course, the story is not yet over . . .as the old-timers say, "The best is yet to come."
As Weintraub says, "When I stop talking, you'll know I'm dead."

With wit, wisdom, and the cool confidence that has colored his remarkable career, Jerry chronicles a quintessentially American journey, one marked by luck, love, and improvisation. The stories he tells and the lessons we learn are essential, not just for those who love movies and music, but for businessmen, entrepreneurs, artists . . . everyone.  description taken from here.

The title of this book makes me laugh.  And, think of my sister.  Katie never, I mean NEVER, stops talking.  So, when I first saw this title, I thought of her, and that made me laugh. : )

The byline of this book is "Useful stores from a persuasive man."  That pretty much sums up the whole entire book.  Weuntraub has lead a most amazing and interesting life!  He is super funny, and that shows in his book.  One of the things that I love most about this audio book is that, while he had a writer write his story for him, he read his own book for the audio book.  I love that you get to hear him telling his own stories, which leads to a nice authentic feel.  This is a fun book to listen to.

Review: The Lion by Nelson DeMille

John Corey, former NYPD Homicide detective and special agent for the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is back on the trail of Asad Khalil, the notorious Libyan terrorist known as 'The Lion'. Corey and his partner, agent Kate Mayfield, tracked Khalil across the US after his threats to wipe out the US in a horrific wave of terrorism. But after methodically eliminating his victims one by one, Khalil disappeared without a trace. Now, years later, Khalil has returned to America to take care of unfinished business. 'The Lion' is a killing machine on a mission of revenge, and John Corey will not stop until he rids the earth of this tyrant once and for all.

This is the first book I have read (listened to) from DeMille.  I have never heard his name before in the writers field.  But, he has been around for a while.  Long enough to have 16 books published and available to the public.

15 1/2 hours of murder mystery.  I have mentioned this before, but I used to love reading murder mysteries.  However, something I am not a fan of, no matter the genre, is war.  I just cannot get into it because they always put more detailing into the war aspect than the story line.   When I say "war", I don't just mean big wars such as WWI.  I also mean "assignments" where people are going against gangs or terrorists and have to elimate people.  I think everyone who follows my other blog (Sexy Women Read) knows that I love romance and erotica books.  However, there is even a few romance genre books with war aspects that I could not make it through.  They just bore me to no end.

So, it is without wonder that I did not care for this particular book.  That being said, other people might enjoy the book.  The characters are well developed, the story line and plot are established ealry on, and jokes are sprinked throughout.

Review: Backseat Saints by Joshilyn Jackson

Rose Mae Lolley is a fierce and dirty girl, long-suppressed under flowery skirts and bow-trimmed ballet flats. As "Mrs. Ro Grandee" she's trapped in a marriage that's thick with love and sick with abuse. Her true self has been bound in the chains of marital bliss in rural Texas, letting "Ro" make eggs, iron shirts, and take her punches. She seems doomed to spend the rest of her life battered outside by her husband and inside by her former self, until fate throws her in the path of an airport gypsy---one who shares her past and knows her future. The tarot cards foretell that Rose's beautiful, abusive husband is going to kill her. Unless she kills him first.

Hot-blooded Rose Mae escapes from under Ro's perky compliance and emerges with a gun and a plan to beat the hand she's been dealt. Following messages that her long-missing mother has left hidden for her in graffiti and behind paintings, Rose and her dog Gretel set out from Amarillo, TX back to her hometown of Fruiton, AL, and then on to California, unearthing a host of family secrets as she goes. Running for her life, she realizes that she must face her past in order to overcome her fate---death by marriage---and become a girl who is strong enough to save herself from the one who loves her best.

BACKSEAT SAINTS will dazzle listeners with a fresh and heart wrenching portrayal of the lengths a mother will go to right the wrongs she's created, and how far a daughter will go to escape the demands of forgiveness. With the seed of a minor character from her popular best-seller, GODS IN ALABAMA, Jackson has built a whole new story full of her trademark sly wit, endearingly off-kilter characters, and utterly riveting plot twists.  description taken from here.

I was confused when listening to this book.  There are 3 woman in the book, but those 3 women are actually the personas of 1 woman.  She is not mentally ill or anything like that.  The personas are to express the different inner workings of her person.

That's not to say it wasn't a good book.  It is worth the time trying to keep all the "people" straight.  Backseat Saints is a great book for just about anyone to read.  Everyone should be able to relate to one or another of the characters in this adventure.  Relating to a character is what, in my opinion, brings them alive.  By relating to a character, you feel what they feel, and when you have a good writer, you seem to take the same journey.  Jackson's book is a must have read!

Review: Private by James Patterson

 The police can't help you

Former CIA agent Jack Morgan runs Private, a renowned investigation company with branches around the globe. It is where you go when you need maximum force and maximum discretion. The secrets of the most influential men and women on the planet come to Jack daily--and his staff of investigators uses the world's most advanced forensic tools to make and break their cases.
The press will destroy you

Jack is already deep into the investigation of a multi-million dollar NFL gambling scandal and the unsolved slayings of 18 schoolgirls when he learns of a horrific murder close to home: his best friend's wife, Jack's former lover, has been killed. It nearly pushes him over the edge. Instead, Jack pushes back and devotes all of Private's resources to tracking down her killer.
Only one place to turn: Private

But Jack doesn't have to play by the rules. As he closes in on the killer and chooses between revenge and justice, Morgan has to navigate a workplace love affair that threatens to blow the roof off his plans. With a plot that moves at death-defying speeds, Private is James Patterson sleekest, most exciting thriller ever.
description taken from here.

I think everyone has heard the name "James Patterson".  Even if you have never read his books, unless you are living under a rock, you have more than likey heard his name.    A huge writer for the suspense and thriller market, James Patterson tosses out another book.

Unfortunately, this one isn't as good as his earlier works.  The book is co-written with Maxine Paetro, which may or may not be the cause of the decline.  The dialog in the book feels forced in some areas, almost as if the author(s) gave up but knew they had to continue.  Reading (or listening) to the book felt like a chore.  I used to love murder mysteries.  I would read them all the time.  (And, yes, I did have a small collection of them hidden away!)  But, this was boring to the senses, I didn't care for the story line.

I thought, maybe it is just me.. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for this book and that's why I'm not liking it.  So, I decided to find some other reviews of the book to see what others thought.  It's. Not. Just. Me.  Out of 50 other reviews, 33 of those reviews said the book was not worth buying, or reading.

The audio book is on 6 CDs and is read by Peter Hermann who has stared in shows such as 30 Rock, Sex and the City and Law & Order: SUV.

Review: Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh

The visionary CEO of Zappos explains how an emphasis on corporate culture can lead to unprecedented success.

Pay new employees $2000 to quit. Make customer service the entire company, not just a department. Focus on company culture as the #1 priority. Apply research from the science of happiness to running a business. Help employees grow both personally and professionally. Seek to change the world. Oh, and make money too.

Sound crazy? It's all standard operating procedure at Zappos.com, the online retailer that's doing over $1 billion in gross merchandise sales every year.

In 1999, Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay) sold LinkExchange, the company he co-founded, to Microsoft for $265 million. He then joined Zappos as an adviser and investor, and eventually became CEO.

In 2009, Zappos was listed as one of Fortune magazine's top 25 companies to work for, and was acquired by Amazon later that year in a deal valued at over $1.2 billion on the day of closing.

In his first book, Tony shares the different business lessons he learned in life, from a lemonade stand and pizza business through LinkExchange, Zappos, and more. Ultimately, he shows how using happiness as a framework can produce profits, passion, and purpose both in business and in life. description taken from here.

I received the audio book of Delivering Happiness to review.  Tony Hsieh is the author, the editor, and the voice of this audio book.  He is also the CEO of Zappos.com, Inc.  You might have heard of Zappos.com before, an online web store where people can purchase brand name products (shoes, purses, accessories, etc.) at a discounted price.

The book isn't overly serious.  Meaning, that Hsiesh doesn't try to sell you a message by shoving facts and bias at you.  He seems easy going through his book, in the sense that he cares and is a hard worker, yet knows when to calm down and live.  Still, Hsiesh gets his message across to readers.

For anyone in the business industry, this would be a book to consider reading, or listening to.

Audio book length: 9 hours
You can purchase the book for $29.98 if you live in the US, or $35.98 for you awesome Canadians : )

Konad Nail Polish

This isn't a review!!

I am addicted to eBay.  There I said it.  I am on there all the time looking at stuff I don't need!  Lately, I have been contemplating buying the Konad Nail Kits.  If you haven't heard of them, LOOK THEM UP!!!  They are super cool!  Actually, I'm going to attach a video below so you can see someone else's review of them.

I didn't buy them from eBay actually.  I got them from http://www.wowsocool.com/. I bought the $35.99 French Nails Kit.  It comes with 3 plates (each with 7 designs on them) 2 nail polishes (white and black) a stamper, a corrector and a scraper.  I am SUPER excited to get it, and as soon as I do, I will be playing with it all the time and you can bet there will be a review and perhaps even a video!

CHECK THIS OUT!!  I THINK IT IS SUCH A COOL IDEA!

Giveaway: A Maze of Grace by Trish Ryan

In her first book, Trish Ryan chronicled the ways in which finding faith lead her to the happily-ever-after ending that had eluded her for so long. Only it wasn't an ending. It was a beginning.

In A MAZE OF GRACE, Ryan picks up where she left off, sharing the early years of her marriage, and the challenges that both shaped and startled her: temptations regarding fidelity, the anxiety of shifting body image, the awkward nature of following Jesus in a decidedly secular family and city, and struggles (depression, trying to conceive) that made her wonder if God had lost her file.

With appealing candor, Ryan sweeps the reader into her life and ponders questions and issues that we all face, dropping nuggets of wisdom along the way that are sure to inspire, encourage and help readers from all walks of life.  description taken from here.

True Blood

Guest post brought to you by Lesli Marc

True Blood is on HBO on directtv around Denver. Alan Ball adapted it from The Southern Vampire Mysteries series by Charlaine Harris. It is set in a fictional small Louisiana town, Bon Temps and is about vampires and humans living together here. The show centers on Anna Paquin who plays Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress at a bar, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton, who is played by Stephen Moyer. This season they have been separated because he was kidnapped and she has been searching for him. He was taken by werewolves to Mississippi and she has been growing closer to Eric, another vampire. Also, her best friend, Tara, has been struggling with the fact that her boyfriend was killed and that he was a murderer.

Sookie's brother, Jason, actually killed him but everyone thinks the sheriff did it and he has been seeing everyone with a bullet hole in their forehead. Another character is Sam and he owns the bar where Sookie works. He is a shapeshifter and has been searching for his real parents. He may wish he never found them. Also, Arlene is a waitress that works with Sookie and she just discovered that she is pregnant again, but not by her boyfriend, the cook. All these characters intertwine to make a show that keeps me coming back for more.

I made a quilt!

I was super excited that I finished this yesterday, so I just had to share it with you guys... I made a quilt!

Review: BreastPumpDeals.com

**This is a sponsored post for BreastPumpDeals.com.  I have not ever bought anything from this site, nor has anyone I know.**

Are you a mother?  Going to be one?  Maybe a friend or family member of yours is about to have a baby?  My cousin will be having his first in the beginning months of 2011, but that is all the new baby news in my family!

I'm bring up the baby subject because of BreastPumpDeals.com, a site where you can buy Medela Breast Pumps at more affordable prices.  A lot of mothers breast feed.   And, as long as the mother eats properly, they say it is the best way to feed your youngling.  I'm not about to get into the controversy of breast feeding right now, however, I just wanted to let you know about this site, BreastPumpDeals.com, where you can buy a breast pump at a more affordable price.  (Because we all know that money is tighter than it used to be with the economy as it as right now.)

A Flashback in Time

Guest posting by Logan Carson

Last night I watched one of the funniest movies I think I have ever seen. Hot Tub Time Machine was a new movie that I found on cannonsatellite.com. After watching the promo for it, I had to order it and I was not disappointed. The movie is about four people who get into a hot tub that takes them back in time to the 80’s. One of the people is only 21 years old so he was not even born during that time but it was funny watching him. He was in an environment that he knew nothing about and it made for some really funny scenes in the movie. Also in the movie was Chevy Chase playing the man trying to fix the time machine so the four men could get back to the present day. While this movie is a fun comedy movie, it should be noted that it is not one for children. I was thinking about ordering this when my little cousin came to visit and I am glad that I watched it with people in my age group. It is not exactly age appropriate for the younger crowd. It does have some mild nudity and crude language and subject matter and some sexual situations. I found it a funny movie and would watch it again.
